How does an ERV work?

An ERV is a mechanical device that draws fresh outdoor air into a home or building while exhausting stale air at the same rate and time.
Unlike a standard HRV, an ERV also transfers conditioned cool, indoor temperatures from the outgoing air to the incoming air, and the humidity from the incoming air to the outgoing air when it is hot outside. When it’s cold outside, then an ERV transfers warm temperatures from the outgoing air to the incoming air.The way it does this is quite ingenious.

What makes a ERV Green?

An ERV requires very little power to operate and allows you to bring fresh air into your home without opening windows and doors.  By controlling the humidity levels in your home, it becomes more comfortable, thereby reducing the need to run additional appliances such as a dehumidifier to control humidity levels in your home.  Fresh clean air creates a healthier environment within the home and promotes the health of the people living inside the home.

An ERV helps to reduce the heating load on your furnace in the winter and the cooling load on your air conditioner in the summer.  Reducing the load on energy hungry appliances helps cut your utility bills while at the same time reducing your carbon footprint.

An ERV is reliable and requires very little maintenance.  Properly maintained units will run for years making them both cost effective and good for the environment.

Lets dig deeper with ERV Frequently Asked Questions

What does an ERV cost?
An ERV for a residential home that requires an uncomplicated installation, should cost between $1000 and $2000 dollars. Complicated or commercial installations will cost more.

Does an ERV eliminate the need for kitchen and bathroom extractors?
No. Excessive moisture in the bathrooms and kitchens still need to be taken care of by spot exhausts.

How do I know what size ERV I need to buy?
The size of an ERV is described by the amount of air that it can move, which is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). The rule of thumb size that is required for a home is calculated by multiplying 15 CFM by the number of bedrooms, plus an additional 15 CFM. For example, a 3 bedroom home will require a 60 CFM size ERV.
