How does a Ductless Air Conditioner work?

An air conditioner is synonymous with air cooling, but a ductless air conditioner is also a heat pump. So what’s a heat pump? The best example of a heat pump is right under your fridge. It is something that extracts heat from one place (inside your fridge) and moves it to another place (outside your fridge). A ductless air conditioner is also a heat pump and does the same thing by extracting the heat from inside your home and moving it outside. In the winter the process reverses as it extracts heat from outside, and moves it inside to warm your home.

A ductless air conditioner accomplishes these tasks without using any ductwork, as is used by conventional air conditioners. An outside unit called the compressor connects with a single or multiple indoor units called air handlers, via a conduit that has been threaded through a small hole in an exterior wall. Each air handler conditions one individual room as dictated by its independent thermostat.

What makes a Ductless Air Conditioner Green?

There are several factors that make ductless air conditioners green.  First, as the name implies, ductless   air conditioners do not use ducts, which avoids the energy losses associated with duct-work of central forced air systems.  Energy losses can be as high as 30%, especially if the ductwork goes through an attic.  Second, ductless air conditioners provide cooling and heating for specific rooms of homes instead of cooling or heating the entire homes.  Placing thermostats in each room can increase the energy efficiency by cooling each room only to the degree to which it is needed.

Ductless air conditioners use heat pumps which increase the overall system efficiency. A heat pump is a low-maintenance, energy efficient solution to a home’s heating and cooling needs.

Now lets dig deeper with Ductless Air Conditioner FAQs

Is a Ductless Air Conditioner expensive?
In the short term yes. In the longer term, no. In terms of the added comfort benefits and better home security compared to a wall / window unit, no. And, if you are considering an addition to your home that includes the cost of ducting, then the answer to the question is a resounding no.

What is the main benefit of owning a Ductless Air Conditioner?
Imagine opening a single water faucet in your home and noticing that every other faucet opens at the same time. Sounds ludicrous? How much water would be wasted every time open a single tap? Well, that is what happens when you heat or cool a single room in your home with a central air conditioner. The main benefit of owning a ductless air conditioner is because it overcomes this problem and by doing so saves energy and money.

What is meant by a mini split zone?
In air conditioning jargon, a zone refers an area in a home that received dedicated air conditioning. In the case of a ductless air conditioner, that is usually one room that is serviced by one air handler, usually located on a wall.

Tips and Tricks for a Ductless Air Conditioner.

The wide variety of ductless air conditioners can be confusing to homeowners who are contemplating this new technology for the first time. One decision that should be easy to make though is to select a heat pump option. The reason for this is because a heat pump ensures a greater level of energy efficiency which ultimately translates in to savings, and which is the most popular reason for choosing a ductless air conditioner.

The next big influencer should be the performance ratings, which are expressed as SEER (the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) and the HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor). The SEER indicates how efficiently the system can cool air and the HSPF, how efficiently it can warm air. For both, high ratings indicate better efficiency.
