How does a composting toilet work?

A standard flush toilet uses precious potable water to flush energy laden human waste down an expensive and unsustainable network of sewer pipes, and on to an expensive earth polluting processing facility. In contrast, a composting toilet receives, stores, and allows the process of aerobic decomposition to convert the waste into nutrients and energy that benefits the earth, without using any water or municipal services.

What makes a composting toilet green?

The question is better answered by us looking at what’s not green about our traditional water flush toilets. I am referring to a toilet that is dependent on an antiquated waste delivery system that cost billions of dollars to manufacture and install, and which costs all of us millions of unsustainable dollars to maintain and replace. And if that’s not bad enough, this same system does not work unless we pay for and then waste water to make it work.

Lets dig deeper with composting toilet FAQs

What does a composting toilet cost?
The cost of a composting toilet should be viewed in the short and long term. The short term cost is what you pay for its purchase, which can range from $750 and more for a self-contained unit. The long term cost takes into consideration the water, sewer and chemical savings over a period of time, which reduces the purchase cost.

Will a composting toilet cause a big stink in my bathroom?
Forget the outhouse experience that you experienced on a farm or while camping. A composting toilet is completely different.
The smell associated with human waste is caused by the combining of liquids and solids and the formation of anaerobic bacteria, which has a strong, bad smell. A composting toilet allows for the separation of the solids and liquids and air to react with the solids which causes odorless aerobic bacteria to form and facilitate the decomposition process. If a composting toilet is working properly, only a slight musty smell will be produced, which is extracted by a ventilator.

Am I going to have to deal with a toilet clogs up all the time?
A composting toilet should never clog up, even while entertaining guests, provided that common sense and the manufacturer’s guidelines are followed. Most models will operate without a hitch even.

Tips and tricks for a composting toilet.

Keep the bowl of your composting toilet clean.
All that’s needed is a small spray bottle with water and vinegar, a toilet scrubber and paper towels to clean any solids that stick to the bowl, and to keep the liquids drain unblocked. Don’t ever use chemical cleaning products and disinfectants as they will kill off the bacteria that are needed to do the composting work.

Manage your composing toilet properly.
It might look like a regular toilet, but it needs to be managed a little differently. First, you need to ensure that solids and liquids are kept apart so that the decomposition process is not compromised. This means that the liquid drain hole needs to be kept clean, and both boys and girls alike must be seated when using the unit. Next, keep insects out by keeping the lid closed at all times.

Keep and rotate a second container.
You don’t want to empty a container that is full, but with contents that are not yet sufficiently decomposed. So purchase a second composting toilet container with a lid and ventilation, and rotate them. This will allow the full container extra time for proper decomposition before removing the humus.
