Swimming pool solar heating

Ten features that make swimming pool solar heating green.

The technology behind swimming pool solar heating is not new. Plants have been capturing, storing and utilizing solar energy since the beginning of time. Yet strangely, humans only started to harness this unlimited source of energy during the 1960s.

In 1967, Swiss scientist Horace-Benedict de Saussure invented the first solar oven. His invention ushered in a tidal wave of useful products powered by this free resource, including swimming pool solar heating. This simple invention has become a common enhancement to swimming pools and is particularly supported for its green/sustainability credentials as listed below:

Drip Irrigation Systems

Drip Irrigation Systems Tips and Tricks

Use the right system – Drip irrigation systems do not suit all garden layouts. So, the first question you might be asking yourself is whether to use a soaker hose or a drip irrigation system.  The answer depends on how sophisticated you want your irrigation to be.  Drip irrigation systems are more suited to complicated garden layouts. If you have a very simple garden with a simple layout, then a soaker hose is probably the perfect solution.  If you decide to use a soaker hose, all you need to do is to unroll it, connect it to the faucet, and turn on the water.

Choose the right emitters – The first step when designing  drip irrigation system is to decide what type of emitters will be needed and  where they will be placed.  There are many different emitters out there.  Bubblers disperse higher amounts of water in a circular pattern.  They are typically used to water large plants such as shrubs and trees.  Drippers produce large droplets or fine streams of water and are usually placed just above the ground. They typically have a variety of different nozzles that determine their watering pattern and the size of the area they will water.  They should be placed in separate zones because they use the greatest amount of water. Similar to a soaker hose, emitter tubing is tubing that has emitters built into it and is useful for plants that are spaced close together.

Solar window films are a great solution for homeowners who cannot afford expensive thermal windows. Their motivation is usually to reduce high electric bills, or UV light damage to their furniture, carpets, drapes and other possessions. No-one likes to live in a home that has hot sun rays beating through the windows during Summer, or to be exposed to passersby. Some homeowners simply want a more decorative look and feel to their homes. Let’s take a look at how the ten best features of solar window films offer solutions.

Home air filter

What makes a home air filter green?

It is also about protecting our health. We would not think that this would be necessary for our homes, however, other than in our working environment, our homes are where we breath the most polluted air.

The problem is caused by the toxic materials that were used to construct and finish our homes. In addition, we and our animals create, and also troupe toxins in from outside. All of this was not an issue before the advent of air conditioning, which since then requires that doors and windows remain closed, thereby trapping the toxins inside.

Allowing our indoor environments to continuously make us sick is unsustainable. Medical treatment is expensive, time off work reduces productivity, and reduces our quality of life.  In combination with responsible indoor air quality management practices, a whole-house good quality media  home air filter with a high MERV rating addresses these problems, while also supporting sustainability for the following reasons:

Pool heating systems

FAQs For Solar Pool Heating Systems

[easyazon_image add_to_cart=”default” align=”right” asin=”B004VU98AS” cloaking=”default” height=”260″ localization=”default” locale=”US” nofollow=”default” new_window=”default” src=”http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/6181QfHxfuL._SL160_.jpg” tag=”agoracured-20″ width=”260″]

Why are solar pool heating systems popular?
Solar pool heating systems use a tremendous amount of energy. In fact, heating swimming pools can be the largest use of energy in a home.  Solar pool heating systems are one of the most cost-effective ways of heating pools and using one yourself, instead of alternatives, will significantly reduce your energy consumption.  Solar heaters have been used in swimming pools for more than three decades.  A solar pool heating systems is one of the best investments you can make for yourself and the planet.

Do solar pool heating systems really heat pools?
Depending on weather and climatic conditions, a typical solar pool heater can raise the temperature in a pool by 5 – 15 degrees Fahrenheit over a couple of days. A system that is sized correctly can effectively maintain temperatures well into the 80°F range.  Occasionally weather conditions may cause the water in your pool to become cooler, however, a little bit of sunny weather will quickly return your pool back to a comfortable temperature.  The effectiveness of solar pool heater also depends on how the size of the collector system and where and how it has been installed.

Can solar pool heating systems cool pools in summer?
When heating your pool, the outside air is hotter than your pool water so the heat flows from the air to the water. During the summer, especially in arid climates, the night air is typically cooler than the water in your pool.  So at night the heat flows in the other direction, from the water to the night air, just like a radiator is used to cool the engine in a car.

Drip system

How a Drip System Works

[easyazon_image add_to_cart=”default” align=”right” asin=”B00L59OKD8″ cloaking=”default” height=”215″ localization=”default” locale=”US” nofollow=”default” new_window=”default” src=”http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51jcYQyB4hL._SL160_.jpg” tag=”agoracured-20″ width=”260″]

A drip system consists of a series of small pipes that carry water under low pressure to your plants. Drip irrigation systems continually provide small amounts of water to the roots of the plants. A drip system is more efficient than a sprinkler system. It conserves water because it delivers water directly to your plants instead of spraying it into the air with the hope that it will soak into the ground and reach the plant’s roots. A drip system delivers water constantly and delivers the water where it is needed, resulting in healthier plants and lower water bills.

Traditional sprinkler systems operate at much higher pressures and deliver a large amount of water for a fixed amount of time. A sprinkler system typically delivers water quicker than the ground can absorb it. Because the water is not absorbed, it either forms puddles, which are unhealthy for plants or runs off or evaporates. A drip system, on the other hand, operates at lower pressures and delivers small quantities of water continuously. Most drip systems are more than 90% efficient when it comes to delivering water to your plants because the water is delivered to the plants slowly and continuously, allowing it to soak into the ground.

Air conditioning filters

How Air conditioning filters work.

Air conditioning filters are required to trap small particles that are suspended in the air. Fundamentally they are simply a medium with small holes that allow air to pass through but not particles.

A home central air conditioning system includes two types of air filters. The first are the flat panel variety which are installed behind the return air grills, and the second is the whole house filter that is usually installed in the air handler.

The flat panel filters are easy to understand. Each one simply consists of a rigid flat sheet of compressed, meshed together fibers. As the air passes through the spaces between the fibers, particles, dust, pollen, dander, fibers and other larger particles, bump into the fibers and are stopped from entering the return air duct.

One of the most unsustainable and disasters of our time is our obsessive love affair with grass lawns. Installing toxic, expensive features around our homes, which have to be maintained on a weekly basis, at great increasing financial, labor and environmental cost, makes no sense at all.

One green alternative is to instead, plant functional native ground cover plants that support the environment, require no fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or mowing, and only a very small amount of maintenance and water. And this includes many durable varieties that handle regular human traffic and recreational activities.  Don’t believe any lawn mower manufacturer that tells you otherwise.

A second green alternative is to use synthetic turf. Here are my 20 best reasons why:

A tubular skylight can be described as a big pipe (tube), usually 8inches to 16 inches in diameter, that has been installed between a home’s roof surface and the ceiling of one of its rooms. Light travels down the tube and illuminates the room during the day time.

To keep rain and dust out, the roof end opening of the tube is covered with a durable clear acrylic dome. The dome has prisms and lenses that magnifies the sunlight and also filters out UV rays.

Drip Tubing FAQs

[easyazon_image add_to_cart=”default” align=”right” asin=”B00EOW788W” cloaking=”default” height=”260″ localization=”default” locale=”US” nofollow=”default” new_window=”default” src=”http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61J0vyTgnmL._SL160_.jpg” tag=”agoracured-20″ width=”220″]

Why is a drip tubing system a good way of watering?

A drip tubing system saves water because it delivers water directly to the roots of plants where it is needed.  It delivers a slow, constant, steady supply of water to your plants, which is good for them and prevents mold and disease.  The systems are easy to use, expand, and maintain.  In fact, once a drip system is installed, you can forget about it and enjoy healthy plants.

What is the difference between a drip tubing system and a soaker hose system?

Both systems deliver water to plants at low pressure. A drip tubing system can more accurately put water exactly where you need it.  Soaker hoses are a little harder to control because water drips out the entire length of the hose, making it likely that you will be delivering water in places where it is not necessarily needed.  A soaker hose is less expensive than a drip system.

How hard is drip tubing to install?

To install drip tubing, simply connect it to an outside faucet and unroll the hose. Loop the tubes around your plants, turn on the water, and walk away.  That’s it!! A drip tubing system requires a little more work, but can be installed without special tools or glue, and usually without a shovel.  You need to decide on the emitters that you will use and where they will be located.  Then it is just a matter of connecting the pipes to the emitters, connecting the system to a water supply, and turning on the water.

Why should I use a drip tubing system?

In addition to saving water and growing healthier plants, drip irrigation cuts down on garden pests that thrive in water and fungal diseases that spread by water movement.  Also, by delivering water only to the plants you want to grow, you will also notice a reduction in the number of weeds that grow in your garden.

The phrase “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is true when it comes to dehumidifiers being green.  Energy Star® certified dehumidifiers require only a small amount of power to run. So they are efficient and cost very little to operate.

Another reason why dehumidifiers are green is that they prevent issues with your house that could harm the environment and be costly to correct.  For example, dehumidifiers improve indoor air quality by fighting mold, mildew, and dust mites so that you can breathe freely.  Mold and mildew grow in moist areas, like a damp basement or the cabinet under your kitchen sink.  Molds reproduce through tiny spores that float through the air. Dust mites, one of the most common triggers of allergy and asthma symptoms also thrive, in high humidity. A dehumidifier brings down the level of moisture in your home, making it unfriendly to dust mites and limiting the growth of mold and mildew. Continue reading »

We have all noticed the white stains on showerheads, faucets, shower stalls, sinks, and basins. This is caused by calcium and magnesium in water that precipitates and then sticks together to form lime scale.

The stains that we notice are only a small part of the problem. What we don’t see is the scale that builds up inside our water appliances, which makes them work inefficiently, and also shortening their lifespan. One can easily see this when looking at the inside of a kettle.

Salt Water Pool Systems create their own hypochlorous acid.  Ever hear of hypochlorous acid?  I never even thought of it until I looked into how chlorine is used to sanitize and clean a pool.  Everyone thinks that chlorine is what sanitizes the water in a pool but in reality it is hypochlorous acid that is doing the job.  Chlorine reacts with the water in the pool to form hypochlorous acid.  This is the easiest and safest way to introduce hypochlorous acid in a pool.

There are two ways to introduce chlorine in your pool.  Probably the most common is to purchase chlorine in some form (liquid, tablets, or powder) and carefully mix it in your pool.  Of course this means that you need to go out and purchase and handle the chemicals and most importantly, remember to be around to maintain the proper chemical levels in the pool.  Salt water pool systems offer another option, which is to use a chlorine generator. When installing a ventilation system in your house you will have to run some ductwork.  You will need to install a fresh air intake vent.  You will also need to install an exhaust vent that will remove the stale air from your home.  In addition to the vents to the outside, you may need to install supply and return ducts in each of the rooms that you intend to vent.

Locate your fresh air intake correctly
Probably the most important consideration is the location of the fresh air intake duct.  As mentioned previously, it is important to separate the intake and exhaust ducts.

On Demand Hot Water Heater Tips and Tricks.

Make sure that your choice of heater(s) will meet your demand.
You must calculate your home’s potential maximum demand for hot water and make sure that it can be met by the on demand hot water heater that you intend buying. If the demand is too great, then you must consider installing more than one heater to run in tandem. Alternatively you should consider dedicated heaters to satisfy individual hot water hungry appliances or parts of your home.

Each on demand hot water heater has a published flow rating. The rate should be able to include maximum  individual appliance flow estimations, such as the following:  Showerheads – up to 4 gallons per minute, Clothes washers – up to 2 gallons per minute, and Dishwashers – up to 2.25 gallons per minute, Regular faucets – up to 2.5 gallons per minute and finally, Bath faucets – up to 4 gallons per minute.

Don’t make a mistake and then have to stand in line for hot water or have to take a cold shower.

Conduct periodic checks.
It is easy to forget about a properly working portable or whole house dehumidifiers.  They are quiet and if they are operating correctly your room or home will be dry and comfortable.  Be sure to check that your dehumidifier is functioning properly on a regular basis.

Don’t allow the bucket to attract mold.
Even the best, perfectly sized dehumidifier does not do any good if the bucket fills with water and turns itself off!!  Be sure to empty the container and to clean it on a regular basis.  Examine the bucket at least once a month (even if you have connected a hose to the dehumidifier) to determine whether it needs cleaning.  Use an antibacterial cleanser or a mild bleach solution to clean the bucket to prevent mold, mildew or bacteria from growing inside the dehumidifier.

Keep the filter clean.
Clean the filter and dust the cooling coils at least once a month as well.  Properly maintained portable or whole house dehumidifiers will keep your room or home cool and comfortable for many years.

Heat pump water heater efficiency has resulted in our planet being spared billions of pounds of additional greenhouse gases. But how does this technology work?

Have you ever wondered why warm air comes out from underneath your fridge? The reason for this is that a fridge uses heat pump technology to move heat from the inside of the fridge and then expels it outside. In the same way, a heat pump air conditioner finds heat in the outdoor air and then moves it indoors.

Heat pump water heater efficiency is as a result of the same technology, which removes heat from the ambient air around it and expels it inside a tank of water. In essence, it’s an air conditioner in reverse.

Tips and Tricks for Variable Speed Pool Pumps.

 Check your pump basket regularly.
Pump baskets can become brittle and crack. When this happens, debris can slip through and end up interfering with the impeller, and cause the pump to malfunction. If it does happen, you can remove it manually. However, best practice is to check the basket regularly to make sure that no cracks are forming and if they are, to be proactive and replace it. Backwashing regularly is also a good idea.

Also, for optimum performance of the whole filtration system,  it is always a good idea to backwash regularly.

Hire a plumber to install your system.
Although a whole house water filter is sold with clear instructions, cutting into water pipes might be best left to a plumber. In addition, an understanding of pressure and flow is helpful to ensure that the system is set up to perform as designed. The “measure twice, cut once” rule applies when it comes to the installation of a whole house water filter.

No hot water.
A whole house water filter system should not have water run through it that is hotter than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Install your system on the cold water line after it has entered the home and before any splits.

So where did we get the idea that whole house water filters are green?
Well, this is how I see it: anything that can get us as humans away from producing more plastic water bottles and depleting aquifers at the expense of local populations, sounds very green to me.

I feel the same way about not drinking chemicals that were used to purify my water, and I don’t want to have the carbon footprint of water deliveries on my conscience either.

But there are many other reasons why whole house water filters are green. Take a look at what I came up with and let me know if you agree:

It is important to Install a saltless water softener as close to the point where the water enters the home as possible and before the water heater. This can be inside or outside the home although indoor protection is always preferable.

Can’t locate the start of the incoming line in a house that has been built on a slab?

As explained above, you need to locate the saltless water softener as close to the source as possible. If there is a slab, then simply trace the pipe backward from the water until you find the splitter. Continue following the pipe until you can’t go any further and then install the unit there. However, you also need to take the electrical outlet into consideration, and if there isn’t one nearby, then you will have to call an electrician to install one.

Hybrid Water Heater FAQ

Hybrid water heater

Can I install a hybrid water heater myself?

It is recommended that Hybrid Water Heaters should only be installed by a licensed plumbing contractor who has been certified to install this type of advanced technology. This is also required to comply with the manufacturers warranty.

What set point will give me the most energy savings?

The published energy savings for hybrid water heater is calculated using a 135 °F set point. Settings below this will achieve greater energy savings. The average set point for households is 125 °F, which in my opinion is still too hot because it can scald. My preferred set point for maximum saving and comfort is therefore around 115 °F.

By reducing the set point to this level, together with good management of how water use will result in maximum savings.

Consider a gopher mesh.

You should know if gophers are active in your yard. Mounds of dirt and chewed up lawn are always a tell-tale sign. If you do have this problem, then you must install a gopher mesh under your crushed granite/stone.

Don’t attempt to patch damaged areas.

Yes, you might think that you are saving a little money, but instead, what you will be doing is degrading the value of your entire synthetic lawn installation. This is simply because, without the correct patching, experience, technique, tools and materials, the chances of you being successful are very slim, and your attempt will always be noticed. Ultimately, you will have to get a professional to put it right, and so you will end up with it costing you more.

Artificial turf grass has turned out to be a boon for not only sports fields and playgrounds, but also for residential backyards. The product has certainly proven it worth on the durability front. This can be seen when sports team players, kitted out with stud shoes tear back and forth over its surface without any apparent damage or sign of wear. In back yards, it looks so real and inviting that most are surprised that to find that it is, in fact, artificial turf grass, and not the real thing. Also providing happy landings for children falling off playground equipment, one has to wonder how it’s made.

What are the disadvantages of synthetic grass?

The first disadvantage to synthetic grass is the up-front cost. This is a problem for those who can’t afford to take advantage of the long-term financial benefits.

The second disadvantage is the fact that it gets hot when the sun shines on it.

The third disadvantage is that if synthetic in-fill materials are used between the fibers, they are a health and environmental hazard. This problem is overcome by using one of a number of natural fillers.

What are the natural alternatives to synthetic infill materials?

Natural alternatives are cork granules, coconut shells, ground up wall nut shells, ground rice, shells, quartz or volcanic rock broken into pea size pieces.

Check the specs of window insulation films before buying.
There are a variety of different specifications that you will see listed on window insulation films.  Although they have different names, they measure more or less the same thing, the amount of the various components of sunlight that they block.  To get the maximum benefit from window insulation films, you need to pick the film that best fits your needs.

Check that you are going to get the right amount of Visible Transmittance.
Low Visible Transmittance (VT)  values (0.33 to 0.55) mean that very little visible light is passed through the film and can give the glass a dark appearance.  From the outside, the film will be more reflective (i.e., look more like a mirror).

Reflective window films are green mainly because of their energy saving features.

Because solar heat gain through windows accounts for nearly 40% of a building’s cooling requirements, studies have shown that inefficient windows can waste anywhere from 25% to 35% of a building’s energy budget.  So while glass clearly has interesting and beautiful architectural properties, it can also have a dramatic effect on the amount of energy required to keep a building comfortable.
